Geralds Story
Among the many treasures uncovered while researching Warren’s family history was his grandfather Gerald’s wartime field diary — a weathered book filled with accounts of courage, loss, and the raw humanity of soldiers at war. Gerald served as a mounted rifleman in the Battle of Beersheba in 1917, one of the defining moments of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. His entries capture the bond between the men and their horses — the trust, endurance, and quiet bravery that carried them across harsh desert landscapes toward victory. He wrote vividly of the relentless heat, the exhaustion, and the camaraderie that sustained them through impossible odds. Yet, amidst the hardship, Gerald found beauty in a place he called Sarona — a rare moment of calm and grace in the chaos of war. When he returned home, forever changed by what he had seen, Gerald named his family farm “Sarona” in memory of that place and the spirit it represented — resilience, hope, and remembrance.

A family affair
Although this book carries Warren’s name on the cover, it was never a journey taken alone. Family and friends have each, in their own way, helped bring it to life — through encouragement, patience, and quiet support along the way. Warren is the first to admit that their help made all the difference. After all, where would any of us be without family and friends? Their presence may not fill every page, but their influence runs quietly through them all.
